Congratulations 2019 Graduates!

It has become a Goucher College Library tradition to ask our senior library workers to select an item to purchase in their honor.

The patriarchal systems connected to the arts have held women back and hindered their success in all history. However, great artists like Frida Kahlo, Augusta Savage, Louise Bourgeois and Yayoi Kusama have shown society that women cannot only do art, but can also change the world with their work. Throughout history, female artists have challenged the stereotypes, restrictions and even laws that upheld exclusionary, prestigious practices in art. In 1929, the Elite Giants joined the Negro National League. Beginning in Nashville, the team moved to Detroit, Columbus, and DC before settling on the east side of Baltimore in May 1938. Later, the team moved to south Baltimore's Westport Ball park.

Today for National Poetry Month, we honor poets of color around the world. The poets of the past have paved the way and broken ceilings for today’s modern poets. Phillis Wheatley was sold into slavery from West Africa, and was the first African-American woman to publish a book of poetry. Amanda Gordan is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate, and is the first poet to appear on a Vogue cover. These women are just two examples of many poets of color who have made history and persevered through any challenges they faced when creating or publishing their art.

Did you know that the first known author is a woman named Enheduanna from 23rd century BCE ancient Mesopotamia? That’s right. The first known author was a woman! Since then, women have continued to write and publish their works, with the first published American women being Anne Bradstreet in 1650. Today, we know legendary authors such as Jane Austen, Alice Walker, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Jenny Han. It wasn’t until the 19th century that women’s rights in education began increasing, and then in 1972, the United States passed Title IX, now protecting women from gender-based discrimination in education. It is with heavy hearts that we post in memory of Bluma Shapiro, Holocaust survivor and long-time Baltimore resident. Goucher librarians were lucky enough to interview Bluma in 2009 about her life before, during and after World War II. Her strength and wisdom inspired and bettered everyone around her. She will be deeply missed.
